Abstract

The discourse in the problem of secularism and secularization appeared in Indonesia, when Nurcholish Madjid urged the need to perform secularization alongside liberalization as part of his renewal movement. Madjid’s idea received various critics from Muslim scholars, and among the sharpest critics came from Mohammad Rasjidi. From this fact, the researcher wants to conduct a research regarding the idea of secularization and its critics. Particularly, the ideas and their critics from the two scholars mentioned above. This research conducted with philosophical approach. This approach depends on rational thinking, to observe a problem in philosophical scope and tries to solve that particular problem using a speculative analysis. As for the method of this study, the researcher utilizes the analytical method to find main concepts around the idea and positions of both scholars regarding the idea of secularization. As for the critical method, it is used to draw critics from Mohammad Rasjidi’s points towards Nurcholish Madjid’s idea. The results of this research are Nurcholish Madjid’s secularization idea is defended using religious arguments. Madjid stated that the basis of his concept is his own understanding of tawhid and khalifatullah. The four key meanings of secularization in Madjid’s works are temporalization, landing of Islamic teachings, recognition of science, and the purification of Islamic teachings. He also introduced new concepts around the well-known themes in Islam aside of tawhid and khalifatullah, namely faith, good deeds, and the concept of human. Madjid also blamed the apology of the Islamic state, saying it was sign of inferiority complex and a failed trial to show the totalitarian side of Islam. Rasjidi disagreed with Madjid, and showing the mistakes within Madjid’s concepts. Finally, Rasjidi shown that the apologetics in general are sign of awareness within Muslims on the Islamic teachings. The researcher aware that his research is not perfect. Thus, the researcher hopes for the upcoming researches within the same subject will come with more depth. So, the next researches will give better result than the previous researches. Key Words: Nurcholish Madjid, Mohammad Rasjidi, Secularization, Islamic State.
